‘The Daisies’(1966) – Vera Chytilova / ‘Twilight’ (2008) - Catherine Hardwick
19.00 Thursday 25th November 2010

A film evening with a talk by London-based artist and writer Hana J.

LimaZulu presents ‘Daisies’ (1966, Sedmikrasky) by Vera Chytilova - one of the major works of the Czech New Wave. In the surrealist tale filmed with a great innovative flair, two teenage heroines Marie I and Marie II think that ‘the world has gone bad so they will be bad, too. ‘ They embark on a hedonistic rebellion against the society leading to a final punishment.

‘Twilight' Saga has become a cultural phenomenon after the first film was released in 2008. For the vampire Edward Cullen, Bella Swan is an ultimate drug – ‘his personal brand of heroin’. By falling in love, she exposes herself to a possibility of Edward losing self–control and killing her: she personifies the Freud’s death wish.

Although very different in its target audience and context, both films deal with a representation of teenage sex/abstinence and forming of female identity. The discussion in-between films will address romance of teenage rebellion, robotic excesses and abstinence porn in the post-feminist society.
